No projectionIn backtests at 40 past dates, a statistical projection (exponential smoothing, damped trend) was not clearly better than a no-change forecast: its errors over the next 3 months were 20% larger, short of the 5% improvement needed, so none is shown. How we decide

Methodology

Malaysian palm oil. The World Bank has changed the quote several times: refined, bleached and deodorised (RBD) average export price free on board (f.o.b.) from January 2026; crude in February–December 2025; 5% bulk delivered to northwest Europe (c.i.f.) from November 2024 to January 2025; RBD f.o.b. Malaysian ports from January 2021 to October 2024; RBD delivered to Rotterdam (c.i.f.) from December 2001 to December 2020; and 5% bulk delivered to northwest Europe before that. Small breaks between specifications are possible. Underlying sources: S&P Global, Bloomberg, ISTA Mielke (Oil World), the US Department of Agriculture and the World Bank. The World Bank's Pink Sheet reports monthly average prices in nominal US dollars, not adjusted for inflation (the chart's constant-dollar option can adjust them). The World Bank compiles them from the market sources it names for each commodity and updates the workbook early each month; recent months can be revised. The World Bank publishes the data under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. The series runs from January 1960. Projection: none. CK Economics backtests a statistical projection of this series (exponential smoothing with a damped trend) by refitting it at past dates and scoring its forecasts against what happened. Its errors over the next three months were not at least 5% smaller than those of the better of a no-change forecast and repeating the same month a year earlier, so no projection is shown.
