Accessibility Statement
We want everyone to be able to read our research and use our data, including people who use assistive technology.
Effective October 12, 2026
Our goal and status
We aim for this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We believe it is partially conformant: most of it meets the standard, with the exceptions listed below. This is based on our own review, last carried out in October 2026. We review the site as we build new features and fix problems as we find them.
What we do
- We design every page to work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator and a “Skip to content” link.
- Pages use proper headings, landmarks, and labels so screen readers can navigate them.
- Every chart has a text label, and the values behind each dataset chart can be read in a table or downloaded as CSV or JSON. The comparison tool has a table of the values it plots.
- Lines in the comparison chart differ in pattern as well as colour.
- We check text and controls against WCAG contrast ratios and fix any that fall short.
- Images in our articles carry text descriptions (cover photos are decorative), and videos we upload carry captions. Our publishing tool won’t publish new images or videos without them.
- Moving decoration can be paused: the “Pause animation” button in the footer of every page (and on the home page) stops the globe and the drifting waves, and the dataset carousel has its own pause button. If your device is set to reduce motion, they don’t move at all.
- Pages can be zoomed to 200% and read on small screens without the page scrolling sideways (wide data tables scroll within their own box).
Known limitations
- Videos embedded from YouTube or Vimeo play in those sites’ own players. Their captions and controls are provided by those services, and we cannot guarantee their accessibility.
- Interactive charts show exact values on hover or tap, and comparing two dates by dragging across a chart needs a mouse. The underlying values are always available in each dataset’s table (including year-over-year change) and downloads.
- The 3D globe on the home page is decorative; its information (major shipping lanes) is not needed to use the site.
