Methodology
The value is the total customs value, in nominal US dollars, of all fishery products imported through U.S. Customs District 27 (Los Angeles, CA) in the month, divided by one million. Fishery products follow NOAA Fisheries' definition and include edible seafood (fresh, frozen, canned and prepared fish and shellfish) and nonedible products such as fish meal, fish oil, seaweed products, coral and shells. Re-exports and exports are excluded. The district covers the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Los Angeles International Airport and other entry points in the region. The figures are summed from NOAA's row-level trade records (one row per tariff product, country of origin and month), read from the FOSS REST API. NOAA compiles them from U.S. Census Bureau foreign trade statistics. Records before 1989 use the older TSUSA tariff classification, mapped by NOAA to the same fishery product groups. Values are not adjusted for inflation or seasonality. The series runs from January 1972, the first month NOAA publishes, with no gaps. Totals were checked against NOAA's FOSS Foreign Trade query page for August 2026 and March 1995, and matched to the dollar. Census revises recent months, and the full history is re-read on each update. Projection: CK Economics statistical projection. The central path comes from exponential smoothing (ETS) on the logarithm of the series with a damped additive trend and a 12-month seasonal pattern, so recent growth is carried forward but fades over time. It runs only as far ahead as backtests support: the model is refitted at past dates, its forecasts are scored against what happened, and it is shown only for horizons where its errors were at least 5% smaller than those of the better of a no-change forecast and repeating the same month a year earlier. The shaded band is the 80% range of those backtest errors. It is a conditional estimate that extrapolates past patterns: it does not model policy, tariffs, recessions or other shocks, and it is not an official forecast of the source agency.
