Methodology

Each value is the month's full (loaded) exports as published by the port, in TEUs. The historical Excel file stores some fractional TEUs from 2017; they are rounded half up to whole TEUs, as the port displays them. Empty export containers are left out. A TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) is the standard measure of container volume; one 40-foot container is 2 TEUs. Oakland's full exports, many of them farm products from the Central Valley, were about 0.75–0.85 million TEUs a year around 2000 and peaked at about 1.0 million a year in 2011–13. The highest month is March 2021 (94,143 TEUs). They fell to 0.74 million in 2023, the lowest year since 2002, and were 0.79 million in 2025. January 1998 to December 2021 come from the port's historical Excel file, and January 2022 onward from its current statistics PDF. The PDF is used where the two overlap, because it reflects the port's revisions to July and August 2023 (up to 30 TEUs per part). Each month's full and empty imports and exports must add up to the port's full, empty and grand totals within 3 TEUs; the port stores some fractional TEUs and shows whole numbers. The sum of each month's parts is within two TEUs of the site's Port of Oakland container volume series. The port can revise recent months.
