Methodology
Real GDP of the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, CA metropolitan statistical area (CBSA 31080), which consists of Los Angeles County and Orange County. Values are in billions of chained 2017 dollars, BEA's current reference year, for calendar years from 2001. BEA stopped publishing GDP for metropolitan areas with its February 2026 county release and now publishes counties only. CK Economics rebuilds the metro total from BEA's county real and current-dollar GDP using a Fisher chain-type index, which is how BEA chains real GDP, scaled to current-dollar GDP in 2017. Chained-dollar values are not additive, so the two counties are not simply summed, though the difference is under 0.1%. For 2001–2019 the series matches BEA's last published metro estimates (FRED RGMP31080, discontinued) to within 0.01%. For 2020–2023 it is 0.03–0.95% lower than those figures because it uses BEA's February 2026 revisions. County inputs are cross-checked against FRED's copy of the same BEA series. BEA revises the latest four years each year and rebases all years after national comprehensive updates, so past values can change. Projection: none. CK Economics backtests a statistical projection of this series (exponential smoothing with a damped trend) by refitting it at past dates and scoring its forecasts against what happened. Its errors a year ahead were not at least 5% smaller than those of a no-change forecast, so no projection is shown.
